Additional Info
All of our wood is Kiln Dried and ready to be worked on by you! *Exceptions to this will be noted in the Features section.
Product Dimensions:
Because of the natural edge look to most of our slabs, our slabs are listed with widest and narrowest dimensions, as well as the longest length of the slab. When bark is attached, the bark is included in those measurements. All measurements are +/- 1/8".
Product Descriptions
Most of our wood has been surfaced on at least one side, with a majority being surfaced on both sides. We do not remove all of the taper to retain as much thickness as possible. These areas will be noted in the item description under 'Tapers'.
When boards are listed, any bow, cup, or twist that we see in the board is noted in the item description, plus or minus 1/8". Our wood is described as accurately as possible but due to the nature of highly figured and/or burled wood, minor cracking and checking might not be evident.
Be sure to read the Description points carefully for any notes regarding Fragile Boards or Soft, Punky, or Rotted areas. Items with these noted in their description will most likely need additional stabilization work done prior to finishing.
Product Pictures
To enhance the grain, character and colors, for picture purposes only, we spray our slabs down with mineral spirits. Once it evaporates, the slab goes back to its dull unfinished state until a finish is applied.
Product Numbers
Item numbers are written on all slabs in black sharpie marker, which can be easily removed with some light sanding or lacquer thinner.
Check out this video to see how to the number removes using lacquer thinner.
Finishing Options
No Work, Ship Slabs as Described
Typically ships next day. Slab(s) will not have any custom work done to them, will be shipped in their listed condition.
CNC Flattened Both Sides, Ready to be Sanded
Average lead time is 1-3 business days. Each slab will be flattened on both sides, and if the product is listed as a table top with a straight edge, pictured with the edges together to display a table top, those products will also be jointed & glued together. If you prefer not to have this step completed, please indicate "do not glue together" in your order notes. Typically these products feature a straight edge and are shown with the edges aligned to illustrate the table top as one piece.
Flattening is performed using our CNC machine, ensuring a level surface on both sides. Any taper or warping mentioned in the item description will result in a reduction of the slabs thickness by the specified amount on each side. If you wish to maintain some of the thickness, we can ignore the taper on the bottom side, we would need this request included in your order notes.
Sanded to 220 Grit, Ready for Finish
Average lead time is 1-2 weeks. All of the work listed in the CNC Flattened Both Sides option is included. In addition, the slabs will be sanded up to a finish grit of 220 grit, making them ready for your finishing application. Additionally, straight cuts will be squared and refreshed, which may result in a slight reduction in length. If you prefer to keep the straight cuts unchanged, please include that in your order notes.
Fully Finished, Ready to Install
The average lead time for a full finish varies depending on whether epoxy fill is included in the order, which is quoted separately. Generally, the timeframe for a full finish is around 2-3 weeks, with an additional 3-5 days if epoxy is added. The fully finished option includes everything listed in previous selections, along with a protective finish.
We offer two types of finishes: Satin Lacquer, a durable pre-catalyst lacquer that provides a subtle satin sheen, and Rubio Moncoat + 2C Oil, which delivers a more matte appearance, which penetrates deeply into the wood. Customers can request a specific finish, but our finishing experts typically select the most suitable option based on the wood's characteristics. When using Rubio Monocoat, the underside of the wood is sprayed with lacquer while the top and edges receive the Rubio finish; however, Rubio can be applied to both sides upon request for an additional fee.
When full finish is selected during a purchase, a member of our sales team will be in touch to quote bark removal, and/ or epoxy services. We do process work orders promptly to maintain our quick average lead times.
Additional Services
Custom Cuts
Any slab can be tailored to your specific dimensions. If you require custom cuts, please indicate this in the notes or comments section before completing your purchase. The cost for cutting will be calculated separately based on the number of cuts requested.
Bark Removal
When choosing a slab that retains some or all of its bark, you have the option to add a bark removal fee to your order for its removal. Please indicate this request in the notes or comments section prior to completing your purchase. The cost for this service will vary based on the amount of bark that needs to be removed.
Epoxy
Epoxy fill services are available and are also priced separately. To receive an estimate for filling all wood voids with epoxy, please specify your preference when placing your order. The pricing for epoxy services covers only the top side of the slab(s), but both sides can be treated upon request and will be quoted accordingly.
Care
For daily care, we recommend using a damp rag on wood surfaces. When wiping the surface, go with the grain, typically the length of the table top, as moving in circles or across the grain could cause scratching on the surface. Although our finishes are heat and water resistant, remember to always use a trivet or hot pad holder on items too hot too touch, and its always best practice to use a coaster for sweating drinks when you can.
For more details on care on our specific finishes, please review our Caring for Solid Wood Furniture Page
FAQ
Common Questions
Q: Are these pictures of the actual slab(s) I will receive, or just one similar? The pictures you see with this listing are pictures of the exact slab you will receive. Each item is listed as a one of a kind product that can only be sold once. See the “Description” tab for more details regarding this item.
Q: I don't need both (or all) slabs, can I just purchase one of them? Unfortunately, we cannot split up any of the packages. However, we do have slabs that are sold in singles as well. You can narrow your search down by using our search filters that correlate with your dimensions. You may also use our online chat service to speak with a wood expert while that can help you find various options while you are browsing.
Q: How do the slabs come if I don’t select any finishing options? A majority of our slabs are planed on both sides before they are listed on the site. This helps smooth out some of the marks left from the saw. You would then have some sanding to do before a finish was applied.
Q: Can you guys custom cut this slab to my dimensions? Absolutely! We have a full shop that can custom cut any of the slabs. If you have any drawings or sketches of your design, you can always send those directly to service@thelumbershack.com to discuss your project with one of our wood experts!
Q: I see I can add epoxy to my order. What do you offer, and how do I specify want I want? We do offer epoxy fill services on any slab that is being fully finished by us. This is a popular choice for river table slabs, or any slabs that may have some larger voids or cracks. We use TotalBoat and West Systems epoxy, and have many different colors and shades in blue, gold, copper, black, white, red, purple, and many more! If you would like to add this to your order, please add a note in the notes section when you go to checkout. From there, someone from our team will contact you with a quote and to discuss your design details.
Q: Does “live edge” mean there is still bark on the slab? The term live edge does not necessarily mean that the slab still has bark on the edges. Often times, the bark has fallen off, and the live edge refers to the surface just below the bark. This has a smoother texture than bark, but still has a very natural look. If the bark is still intact, this will be listed in the Product Features section of the listing.
Q: It says the slab has been planed on both sides. How is that different from flattening? Most of our slabs are finished planed on both sides. This means the slab was ran through our planer to smooth out the surface of the wood. The main difference is that the planer will not flatten/sand out any of the tapers, bows, cups, or twists that the slab is listed with. You can find these details in the Description section of this listing. The flattening services would remove any tapers, bows, cups, or twists listed with that slab, leaving you with a perfectly level surface on one or both sides of your slab.
