We've got options for your live edge wood project

When you order a finished product from The Lumber Shack, there are many steps we take to create the final product. However, if you would like to order a partially finished wood piece from us and then complete the rest of the steps on your own, we have several levels of finishing options for you to consider. Read more to learn about the different routes you can take when choosing to finish your specially selected wood piece on your own.

No Work

For our customers who want to take on the entirety of the finishing work on their own, we deliver the selected cut of wood in its raw condition. It will then be up to you to joint, glue, flatten, prepare, and finish the wood after you have received it. Some find joy in this work, but for those of you who do not want to do it on your own, we have plenty of options.

Joint & Glue Up

If you want to take on some of the workload but not the entire thing, we are happy to take care of any jointing and gluing of the slabs for you.

Flatten One Side

In addition to jointing and gluing, our team can flatten your preferred side of the wood slab that you choose.

Flatten Two Sides

Jointing, gluing, and flattening of both sides of the wood slab is another option if you want less of the finishing work load to be on your shoulders.

Preparation of Slab

After jointing, gluing, and flattening both sides of the slab, our team will expertly sand down the wood so that all you have left to do is apply the finish of your choice.

Fully Finished Products

If you choose to go this route, our team will, joint, glue, flatten, prepare, and finish your wood slab to your specifications so that it is delivered to you fully finished and ready to use for whatever purpose you have in mind.

If you are willing and able to do most of the finishing work on your own, it is important that you invest in the right tools for the job. In order to flatten the wood, you will need to have access to a planing sled that is built to fit the size of your wood slab. It is recommended that you only take off 1/16 of an inch at a time with a router, so as to not remove too much from your slab. It’s better to remove too little than to remove too much. Some people choose to only flatten one side of the wood slab (the side that will be showing or used), but many choose to flatten both sides of the wood slab for a cleaner look.

After flattening the surface of your wood slab, you may find that there are still some uneven areas or cracks. You will want to fill these with epoxy. After assuring that the surface of your slab is as smooth as you wish, you can start preparing the wood for its finish by sanding it down. After all these steps are completed, you can apply a clear finish to maintain the wood’s most natural look.
